Wednesday 3 August saw the seventh annual Elmbridge Play Day take place in Hurst Park, East Molesey. Hundreds of families from across the whole Borough turned up to take part in the national celebration of children’s right to play in the beautiful surroundings by the River Thames.
All activities were free and there were endless opportunities to play, create, run, listen and build. With so much to do, the most difficult part was deciding what to try.
Creative children made a giant cardboard city and produced some wonderful works of arts at the Shout! Holiday Activities stand, while Elmbridge Museum helped them re-create toys from the past to take home.
Adventurous kids took on the inflatable assault course, tirelessly jumped up and down on the bouncy castle and built dens to withstand all weather conditions.
There was dancing, drumming, water fighting, sports challenges for all ages including karate and touchtennis. There was even a comfy reading snug in the Surrey Libraries corner for when the going got tough and little legs needed a rest.
The fire rescue services were as popular as ever. They were inundated by young admirers keen to check out the equipment and try on the uniform.
Councillor Janet Turner, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “Filling up the summer holiday with fun things to do for children of all ages is a top priority for many parents and carers. It was great to see everyone enjoying some outdoor fun at Play Day yesterday. The children loved trying out the numerous activities available and it looked like adults didn’t mind getting stuck in either! Let’s hope that Play Day has encouraged them to take up new activities and discover more of the local green spaces.
“There are many more free family events planned for this summer so don’t hesitate to visit the Council’s website for further information. And if you are thinking about more structured activities to keep your children busy, why not check out our ever popular Shout! Holiday Activity Scheme which is in full flow for the summer.”
This free family event was part of the Shout! Holiday Activities programme. The Shout! brochure is available now. For further information please see the website and to make bookings call 01372 474634. The holiday activities run until Friday 2 September (excluding Monday 29 August bank holiday).
