On Monday 12 March the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Rachael Lake, led Elmbridge Borough Council Councillors and guests in a Commonwealth flag raising ceremony at the Civic Centre.
This initiative, now in its fifth year, took place in locations throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories, and Commonwealth countries with over 850 Commonwealth flags being raised. It has caught the imagination of thousands of participants from all walks of life inspiring them to join with others throughout the Commonwealth.
The Chief Executive, Rob Moran, read a special message from The Right Honourable Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, and the Mayor read a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation before the raising of the Commonwealth flag at 10am. This was the same at all the ceremonies across Commonwealth countries to reaffirm the commitment of all Commonwealth member states to democracy, development, and respect for diversity.
The Mayor said, “This was a wonderful way to recognise Commonwealth Day and Elmbridge Borough Council was delighted to have been involved once again. We were pleased to acknowledge publicly the continuing shared values around the Commonwealth.”
