Weekend Round Up
Team Elmbridge had an extremely impressive and consistent medal haul, narrowly finishing runners up (out of 11 Boroughs) at the P&G Surrey Youth Games 2011.
Some truly inspirational individual and team performances over the two days ensured some gripping and memorable sporting moments for all involved.
Over 500 young people registered to be a part of Team Elmbridge for this years P&G Surrey Youth Games, the highest number of applications in Elmbridge to date! This high participation in the borough trials resulted in Team Elmbridge entering 25 out of a possible 27 teams and meant around 220 youngsters got to compete against the other 10 Surrey boroughs in a variety of sports
The Sports Development Team also launched our 'Young Ambassadors Scheme' earlier this year. Youngsters from Team Elmbridge 2010 were asked to act as young ambassadors to promote the P&G Surrey Youth Games in their school. They presented an assembly based on their own experience and wore their official 'Young Ambassadors' t-shirt.
Overall, Elmbridge came away with a gold medal in junior girls football, silver medals in boys basketball, non-contact boxing, girls cricket, junior mixed hockey, senior girls hockey, senior girls football, junior mixed squash and junior boccia. Bronze medals were won in mixed tag-rugby, junior mixed badminton, and senior boys hockey.
Highlights of the weekend include a fantastic performance from the boys basketball team who made it through to the gripping final against Woking. After a gutsy 9 minutes on court the boys were two baskets down but managed to break for the basket twice causing both teams to draw 10 - 10 at full-time. Extra time for the golden basket was called and despite two nail biting near misses from Elmbridge, Woking took the basket to win. Such a close final shows how far the basketball team have come since last year when they finished in seventh place.
Both the girls' football teams also excelled themselves at the weekend. The senior team fought hard against Woking in the final, which also ended in a draw and went to penalties. After each team had taken 6 penalties both teams were still equal with some magnificent saves from both teams goalkeepers but eventually Woking won the shoot out on the sudden death rule. The junior girls team also scored highly in the skills and drills section and took the gold medal position.
Another inspired performance came from our junior boccia team who played with great spirit and determination resulting in a win against Reigate and Banstead to take second place. One of Elmbridge's team also won 'Throw of the Competition" which was a great way to finish the tournament.
Mini Squash has been a sport that the development team has been working hard to increase participation and standard for a few years, and it is pleasing to see that hard work came to fruition by taking the runners up spot, increasing three places from last years fifth place. An Elmbridge girl achieve player of the tournament for her consistent efforts.
Strong performances were seen in our mixed tag rugby, all hockey teams, girls cricket and junior badminton.
