Elmbridge Borough Council trains Young Rugby Leaders

On Wednesday 17 February 2010, players from the under 16 squad at Weybridge Vandals Rugby Club received great advice and training from North West Surrey Community Rugby Coach, as part of their Young Rugby Leaders Course.

The Young Rugby Leaders Course involves 6 hours of theory and practical lessons followed by 4 hours community delivery. On completion of the course, the participants will have acquired the necessary skills and experience to plan a tournament, lead basic sessions and be qualified referees for tag-rugby matches.

The Sports Development Team at Elmbridge Borough Council have organised this course to give the young players at Weybridge Vandals the necessary skills and knowledge to act as referees and event co-ordinators for the Elmbridge Schools Tag-Rugby Tournament. This will take place at their home turf on Wednesday 10 March 2010. The club are hosting this tournament in preparation for the P&G Surrey Youth Games 2010 and coaches will be scouting potential players (girls and boys) aged 7 - 9 years and inviting them back for further weeks of training to represent Team Elmbridge.

The Young Rugby Leaders will be assisting coaches during the training sessions for the P & G Surrey Youth Games to gain valuable coaching experience. This will help to develop their leadership skills and encourage them to take further training to become fully qualified coaches in the future.
