Play Areas

Brooklands Community ParkThere are currently 31 play areas across the Borough either attached to recreation grounds, or in other open spaces. Many of these have been upgraded or completely renewed in recent years to provide an exciting and safe range of play for children ranging from toddlers to young people.

Depending on the site, the equipment and facilities can include multi activity units with slides, bridges and tunnels; swings, spring toys, aerial runways, see saws, roundabouts, sand pits and paddling pools. Some sites are enhanced with floor graphics such as hopscotch and snake trails. Most play areas have a picnic table and benches.

Safety is, of course, a major consideration - all equipment is on wet safety surfacing and all except two areas are enclosed with dog proof fencing.

The equipment in all the play areas is maintained under contract by a specialist company, Recreational Supply Services, and all areas and equipment are subject to regular safety inspections by a team of qualified staff.

Stoke and Station Road Play Areas

Both areas are now open following refurbishment, where the facilities have been improved in line with the results of local consultation, this has been in accordance with the agreed schedule to complete in time for the 2010 Summer School Holidays. Station Road is receiving final colouring and graphics on the paths during week commencing 12 July 2010, which shouldn't affect general public enjoyment of the area.

Downside and Neilson's Field

Thorough local consultation has now been undertaken for the above mentioned play areas which are due for refurbishment as part of the rolling capital programme. Those consulted included neighbourhood residents, ward councillors and schools and colleges, as well as users whilst they visited the facilities. The response to a range of questions covering current provision and preferences for the future have assisted the leisure officers in creating bespoke Design and Build tender specifications for each area, in order to obtain competitive prices from specialist companies. Prices have now been received, which are currently being evaluated.
