Advertising and Trading Regulations for Businesses during the Olympic Games 2012

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) announced regulations for businesses that want to trade or advertise on or close to the route of the Olympic Cycle Road Race and Time Trials during the Games. There will be restrictions on outdoor trading on event days. These restrictions will make it unlawful to advertise or trade in defined |Event Zones unless you are authorised by LOCOG.

The regulations were created to ensure spectators and those taking part in the Games can access venues easily and safely, and that the Games have a consistent look, without unauthorised marketing close to the Olympic Cycle Road Race and Time Trial Routes.

The |Advertising and Trading Regulations cover all aspects of advertising and trading in open public places within |Event Zones (there is a postcode checker) during the periods in question, however there are a number of exceptions.

Examples of activities where no authorisation is required

  • deliveries of food and newspapers
  • advertising on buses and taxis carrying passengers through an Event Zone
  • advertising inside a building
  • most existing shop signage.

Examples of activities where authorisation must have been obtained

  • open air trading activities including selling from temporary buildings like marquees
  • busking and collecting for charity
  • advertising on billboards and poster sites - authorisation will be reserved primarily for sponsors of the Games.

Examples of advertising that is not expected to be permitted

  • advertising by non-sponsors, which aims to engage in ambush marketing e.g. temporary advertising, distributing direct advertising literature, and arranging for advertising giveaways in an Event Zone.

Can I make an application to advertise or trade?

The application process to trade and advertise within the Event Zones has now closed. All applications received before the deadline of 31 March will be processed in due course. For further information visit the |London 2012 website.

Enforcement

The ODA is responsible for enforcement of the Regulations and is working with local councils to designate and train a small team of trading standards officers and other enforcement officers to enforce the Regulations around the Cycle Road Race and Time Trials route.
