Royston Pike died at the age of 84 in 1980, and in recognition of his achievements the lecture series continues to this day.Edgar Royston Pike, formerly Chairman of the Esher Council from 1946 -48 introduced the 'Esher Library Lectures' in the late sixties. In 1974 the title of the lectures was changed by Elmbridge Borough Council to the 'Royston Pike Lectures' in appreciation of his 20 years work on the Library Committee.
To mark this year's centenary of Brooklands, the lecture season commences September 2007 in the Bluebird Room, Brooklands Museum, Weybridge. Allan Winn, the Museum's Director, will be telling us about the history of the site and setting up the Museum.
King George's Hall in Esher is still the main venue for the lectures, hosting six on a variety of subjects including Five Fine Surrey Gardens, Pets and Power in Ancient Egypt and From Pictures to the Page. Other venues include The Vera Fletcher Hall in Thames Ditton, Claygate Centre for Retired People.
Lucinda Hawksley, a biographer, art historian and award-winning travel writer - and Charles and Catherine Dickens's great-great-great granddaughter - will be giving a talk on the Charles Dickens household's Christmas celebrations.
Admittance price for all lectures remains £1.70 per person.
