The Cecil Hepworth Playhouse
Latest news on The Cecil Hepworth Playhouse Refurbishment
The 'Cecil Hepworth Playhouse' is now open to the public after going through an extensive renovation programme to bring it up to standard for the enjoyment of the community and its current and future user groups.
The Playhouse is one of the most prominent arts venues in the Borough. With its distinctive 1920's features familiar to the Walton residents, it has long held a much-respected place in the heart of the local community. Originally built by Cecil Hepworth, it then went through various ownerships before becoming a popular venue for amateur theatre productions. It had last been refurbished in the 1960's.
Much of the new refurbishment work has been faithful to the original features whilst taking this great venue into the twenty first century. The decision to refurbish the Playhouse was taken after a measured, full condition and structural survey of the building highlighted a number of issues and necessary improvements to allow it to be safely used by the public.
The refurbishment included repairs to the drainage, new windows, extensive works to the roof, new fire partitions and doors including fire detection and emergency lighting systems, new heating, ventilation to the auditorium, refurbishment of foyer, toilets, dressing rooms and bar, new floor finishes throughout, full external and internal decoration.
The Cecil Hepworth Playhouse now has all the facilities needed to offer the public a dynamic programme of drama, music, dance and comedy and for making it a focal point for the cultural life of the Borough. It is available to hire for public and private use.
