Community Toilet Scheme
The Community Toilet Scheme recently launched in Elmbridge aims to provide clean, safe and accessible public toilets in more convenient locations for residents and visitors to the borough.
How does the scheme work?
Under the scheme, local businesses like pubs, restaurants, shops and supermarkets let members of the public use their toilet facilities free of charge during normal opening hours. Several of the premises have wheelchair access and baby changing facilities. No purchase of goods or services is required. Businesses have the right to refuse entry in exceptional circumstances.
Local businesses are paid a small annual fee to open up their toilets for public use. The fee is dependent on the facilities provided.
Participating premises will display one of the following stickers in their windows according to the facilities offered:
Street signage indicates direction of the participating businesses.
How do we make sure that toilets are kept clean and safe?
All Community Toilet Scheme members are inspected on a regular basis by Council Officers to make sure they meet appropriate standards.
How to join the scheme?
Additional business are invited to take part in the scheme if they fill specific criteria. It is hoped that the scheme will ultimately provide public toilets in areas of the borough where they are currently none. If you are interested in joining the scheme, |please contact the Leisure Division
What local businesses take part in the Community Toilet Scheme?
The scheme was first introduced in Walton on Thames and will roll out to the rest of the borough over the next few months.
