Disrepair

Standards in Rented Properties

All rented properties must be maintained in a satisfactory condition. If you are a tenant and the property you live in is badly maintained, damp or dangerous and the landlord is not taking steps to sort the problem out, an officer will arrange a visit to inspect the premises and discuss what action can be taken.

Disrepair

Disrepair covers all parts of the structure of the property, from the chimney on the roof down to the drains in the ground. Matters such as damaged or missing slates from the roof, dampness, damaged glazing or rotten wooden windows and dangerous electrical wiring, can all come within the definition of disrepair.

Examples of disrepair are:

If the Council inspects a property that is found to be in substantial disrepair they may serve a notice on the person having control of the property, e.g. the landlord. Such a notice would specify the works required to remedy the particular conditions to which the notice relates. It would also specify a reasonable time by which the works must be started and a reasonable period within which they are to be completed.
