The Handyperson Service
If you live in Elmbridge and either own you home or rent from a private landlord and:
- You are living on a low income, receiving a means-tested benefit or are eligible to apply for one
- Or you have a physical or mental disability
- Or you are aged 70 or over
and you need a minor repair or small job carried out in your home, then you may want to use the Handyperson Service run by Care and Repair Elmbridge.
The type of jobs which the handyperson can carry out for you includes:
- Fitting grab rails, banister rails and galvanised rails.
- Electrical work - such as replacing light bulbs, fuses and plugs and fitting doorbells.
- Fixing drainage problems - like unblocking sinks and cleaning blocked gullies.
- General housing assistance like putting up curtains, removing floor coverings, moving small furniture, putting up shelves and pictures, replacing small window panes, repairing small areas of rotten wood, tiling small areas and re-hanging doors
- Plumbing work - such as replacing broken toilet seats, renewing bath sealant, small repairs to leaking pipes and changing tap washers, cistern washers and ball valves.
- Improving your safety and security - such as fitting door chains, locks, spy-holes, smoke alarms, stair gates, cooker guards and fire guards
- Installing/removing key safes
- Moving beds and checking heating for hospital discharge.
- Carrying out home safety checks.
The charges include the cost of materials and labour and are as follows:
Materials: charged at cost.
Labour charge: £17 per hour although if you are in receipt of a means tested benefit this is reduced to £10 per hour.
Key safes cost £38 each.
The labour charge for fitting key safes is £12.00, although if you are in receipt of a means-tested benefit, the charge is £8.00.
