Prepare for Summer
The Environmental Health & Licensing Division have produced some tips to help you enjoy a happy and carefree summer.
Sun Safety
It may be trendy to have a tan but the sun doesn't do you any favours.
Remember to:
- SLIP on a T shirt
- SLOP on some sunscreen
- SLAP on a hat
- WRAP on a pair of sunglasses
This will prevent painful sunburn, guard against skin cancer and reduce skin ageing. Don't just protect yourself though, make sure the rest of your family and especially your children are protected as well.

Barbeques
- Try to put them somewhere in the garden where they won't cause a smoke or smell problem to your neighbour.
- Remember your food hygiene precautions: store food safely, wash your hands properly, cook the food thoroughly, and once food has been cooked it should be eaten immediately. Any food left over an hour after cooking should be refrigerated or thrown away. Don't reheat cooked food.
- Give thought to your neighbours whilst enjoying your barbeque - keep the noise down and don't take the hi-fi out into the garden and have a disco as well. They may well not share your taste in music.

Burglar Alarms
Before you go on holiday make sure that you have a nominated keyholder for your alarm who can silence a faulty alarm within 20 minutes (often next door neighbours are willing). It is not a legal requirement to register keyholders, however, a scheme exists where (for a small annual charge) |SurPol will keep details of keyholders.
Remember - if the alarm goes off and causes a noise nuisance we might have to disconnect it and send you the bill!

Bonfires
Summer is a time for lots of gardening. Don't burn the garden refuse though, this can causes smoke or smell problem for your neighbours, so instead:
- compost it
- take it to the tip
- use the |garden waste service.
