Advice about Animals, Insects and Reptiles

Some animals, insects and reptiles (which are not covered under our pest control service) may cause a regular nuisance e.g. foxes and pigeons and some might occasionally be a nuisance. Most are generally harmless and some may be protected by law.

|Badgers
Badgers and their setts are protected under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992.

 

|Bats
It is an offence to intentionally kill, injure or take/capture a bat.

 

|Bees
Bumble bees, honeybees, solitary bees and wasps can all be found in British gardens.

|Cockroaches
Cockroaches are a serious pest and need to be treated by a professional pest control company.

Crane flies are harmless - they are merely large flies and they do not bite or sting.

 

|Earwigs
Approximately 14mm long, dark brown with a conspicuous pair of "pincers" at the rear end.

 

|Foxes
Urban foxes are born, live and breed in towns.

|Maybug (Cockchafer)
The adult beetle is a night-flier and often comes crashing into lighted windows.

Please report sightings to the Forestry Commission or to your Local Authority.

 

|Pigeon
Elmbridge Borough Council does not provide a pest control service to deal with nuisance pigeons.

|Red Lily Beetle
Mild winters and warm summers have allowed colonies to develop across the UK.

 

|Silverfish
Silverfish are found where conditions are moist and favour kitchens, larders, bathrooms and basements.

 

|Snakes
The British Isles has three native snakes.

|Woodlice
They are of no public significance and will not bite humans or pets.
