Noise from Early Morning Waste Collections

Waste collections can be a noisy activity - particularly when glass is involved.

Waste collection companies usually prefer to make collections during the early hours of the morning when less traffic is on the roads, and this is mostly carried out without a problem. However, difficulties can arise in residential areas where the noise from vehicle engines and tipping can cause disturbance to those living close by.

There are two types of waste collection:

  • Waste collections from domestic premises
These are the carried out by contractors working for Elmbridge Borough Council. Collections do not start until 7.00 am. If you are being disturbed by noise from domestic waste collections before 7.00 am, please contact |Environmental Care.

These are not carried out by the Council. Businesses hire their own contractors. Environmental Health & Licensing discourage commercial waste companies from making noisy collections in residential areas before 7.00am or after 11.00pm Monday to Saturday or before 9.00am or after 11.00pm on Sundays and Bank holidays.

What can I do if I am disturbed by commercial waste collections during the early hours?

  1. Identify the address of the premises where the collection is taking place and the company carrying out the waste collection. Make a note of the date and time and, if possible, the vehicle registration number.

  2. |Image of comments icon which links to feedback formContact the company concerned and report the problem. Make a note of the date you made the call, the name of the person you spoke to and any complaint reference number you are given.
