Smelly and Infested Bins

When food waste is present in your bin, the smell will sometimes attract flies, leading to maggots.

To reduce unpleasant smells in your refuse bin you can:

  1. Always keep the lid on the bin closed to stop flies entering and laying eggs.
  2. Double bag food waste, in particular meat and animal waste. Remove as much air as you can before sealing the bag to slow the general decomposition.
  3. Don't leave food waste exposed in your home or kitchen bin, as this will give flies a chance to lay their eggs.
  4. Clean your bin regularly. Use detergents and other cleaning products with fragrances to help keep flies away.
  5. Flush waste from nappies down the toilet, and then double bag the disposal nappy before putting in your bin. Using real nappies can reduce the amount of waste in your bin that is sent to landfill.
  6. Sprinkle vinegar in your bin to help neutralise odours.
  7. Recycle as much as possible to reduce the amount of waste in your bin.

How to get rid of Maggots in your refuse bin

You will only get maggots in your bin if eggs have been laid in food waste by flies. Most of the maggots will be removed once your bin has been emptied. By following the steps up above you can prevent the infestation of maggots in your bin.

The only effective way to get rid of maggots is to remove them along with the contents of your bin. There are a number of bin cleaning services available, such as 'Inbincible': 0800 781 8633.

After your bin has been emptied clean and disinfect it thoroughly. Using boiling water can easily kill maggots.
