Autumn is here and it's the perfect time for us to write our first garden & composting newsletter. Below you can find out about leaf mulch, sacks of potatoes and hibernating hedgehogs.
Don't let all the goodness in your garden go to waste. Compost at home and see the benefits of your hard work. Spread your nutrient rich compost around your garden to give your plants a first class feed. Autumn is a great time of the year to have a garden clear out and to fill up your compost bin so your compost ready to use in spring. Don't forget to cut up and compost your Halloween pumpkin too!
Perfect compost tip: If you're compost is attracting flies try burying food waste 6-12" underneath the surface.

If you use our garden waste service and upgraded from garden sacks to a brown top wheeled bin you can use your old sacks for growing potatoes or making leaf mulch.
Love your leaves!Now that autumn is here it's time to deal with all those fallen leaves. Instead of overfilling your compost bin why not turn them into really useful leaf mulch. Leaf mulch is a dark brown, crumbly material that makes an excellent soil improver and lawn conditioner. It can also be used in seed and potting mixes.
Step 1: Use a bin liner, old gardening bag similar.
Step 2: Fill up your leaf mulch bag with leaves.
Step 3: Leave your bag in an out-of-the-way place in your garden for about a year. By then you will have a bag of leaf mulch that is ready to use.

Make sure you continue to put down food and water all through the winter because they do wake up frequently and need it.
Be aware! Hedgehogs might be nesting in your compost heap so check before you dig in the fork to turn it over.
