Elmbridge Borough Council elections 3 May 2018

On Thursday 3 May 2018, residents will have their say on how Elmbridge Borough Council is run.  One councillor in each of the 16 Wards is being elected. Further information about when each Councillor's term of office ends is available to view.

Elmbridge Borough Council comprises 48 elected Councillors, representing 16 Wards across the Borough. Councillors are elected to serve a 4 year term with elections covering one third of the seats taking place every year, except 1 in 4, when County Council elections are held.

How to find out more information about the candidates

The names of the candidates and the parties for whom they are standing on behalf of and the Independent Candidates are published above under 'Official Notices'.

Elmbridge Borough Council does not publish any information about the candidates' campaigns. The candidates and/or political parties may publish their own literature. The local and national media may provide information.

Register to vote

The deadline to register to vote has now passed.

Registered voters will be sent a poll card at the end of March with information about the election. If you have not received a poll card, or you have recently moved, you may not be registered to vote.  You can contact Electoral Services or phone 01372 474474 to check if you are registered.

Who can vote

To vote at these elections, you must be aged 18 or over on election day and be a British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen, or citizen of other member states of the European Union.

Your name must appear on the Register of Electors before you can vote.

Voting by post

Voters who have already requested to vote by post will be sent a postal poll card around the end of March with information about their postal vote.

The deadline to apply to vote by post has now passed.

If you are unable to vote in person on 3 May, you may wish to consider voting by proxy instead.

When will I receive my postal vote?

Postal voters who applied by 8 March 2018 will be sent their postal vote around 16 April 2018 by first class mail.

Postal voters who applied between 9 March 2018 and 18 April 2018 will be sent their postal vote around 20 April 2018 by first class mail.

How do I complete my postal vote?

When you receive your postal vote, read the instructions carefully.  Your postal vote includes the ballot paper and a postal voting statement.  Complete both of these and return them straight away.  Completed postal votes need to be returned to the Returning Officer by 10pm on Thursday 3 May. If you miss the post you can hand your completed postal vote into any polling station in the Ward or the Civic Centre in Esher.

If you need help to vote, you can ask someone you know or get independent help by contacting Electoral Services.

If you lose your postal vote or make a mistake, contact Electoral Services straight away.  A replacement postal vote can be issued before 5pm on Thursday 3 May.

Voting by proxy

If you will be away or cannot go to the polling station on 3 May, you can apply to vote by proxy. This means someone else can vote on your behalf. 

Completed applications must reach us before 5pm on Wednesday 25 April.  Your appointed proxy must attend your polling station to vote on your behalf.

Application form to vote by proxy - print a copy, complete it by hand and return it by one of the following methods:

  • email your form as a scanned attachment or photo

  • return by post

  • hand into the Civic Centre in Esher before the deadline.

If you are unable to print a copy of the form from our website, please contact Electoral Services for a paper version.

If after 5pm on Wednesday 25 April you have a medical emergency or learn you cannot go to the polling station because of work reasons, you can apply to vote by emergency proxy. This means someone else can vote on your behalf. The deadline for completed applications is 5pm on 3 May.

Your polling station

If you are registered to vote, a poll card will be sent to you at the end of March with further information about the election, including a map of your polling station.

Polling stations are open between 7am and 10pm on Thursday 3 May.

How to vote

Always read the instructions on how to complete the ballot paper carefully, even if you have voted before. The ballot paper lists the name of each candidate along with their party name and party logo (if any).

You are able to vote for one candidate at the Elmbridge Borough Council election. Simply put an X (a cross) next to the candidate that you wish to vote for.

Who is elected

The candidate with the most votes is elected using the first past the post system.  A total of 16 Borough Councillors for Elmbridge will be elected, one per Ward.  Each will serve a 4 year term of office.


The count will take place at Sandown Park Racecourse in Esher, at 9.30am on Friday 4 May. An announcement of the results is expected around 4pm and will be publicised at Election Results.
