Allowances for Councillors

Report of the independent Remuneration Panel

Notice is hereby given that, pursuant to the Local Authorities (Members' Allowances) (Miscellaneous Provisions) Regulations 2001, the Council has received recommendations from an Independent Remuneration Panel appointed in accordance with the Local Government Act 2000 regarding the allowances paid to councillors.

The Council at its meeting held on 9 December, 2009, considered the recommendations of the Independent Remuneration Panel of the Members' Allowances Scheme for implementation with effect 1 April, 2010 and agreed that:

• the Basic and Special Responsibility Allowances for Members of the Council for 2010/11 should not be increased with effect from 1st April, 2010 but should continue at their current level (i.e. the 2009/10 levels).

Furthermore, following the Council's decision to move to one Overview and Scrutiny Committee and in order to ensure that the Council had an approved Members' Allowances Scheme which reflected the organisational structure of the Council, the Independent Remuneration Panel were asked to review the new proposals. In this regard, the Council, at its meeting on 21 April, 2010, considered the additional recommendations of the Independent Remuneration Panel of the Members' Allowances Scheme for implementation with effect 1 April, 2010 and agreed that:

• the Special Responsibility Allowance for the Chairman of the one Overview and Scrutiny Committee remain at £6,000; and
• the Special Responsibility Allowance for the Vice-Chairman of the one Overview and Scrutiny Committee, be increased to £3,000.
