Councillor Mrs Lyon is a Thames Ditton and Weston Green Residents' Association Member and a Thames Ditton Ward Councillor. I have represented Thames Ditton since 1973 and since then have served on all the main committees and served as Mayor in 1987-8. Outside the Council, one of my main interests has been in the development of the Vera Fletcher Hall in Thames Ditton as a centre for the community, with professional theatre, music, opera, charity performances, children's shows and the Ember Centre for the Retired. I actively supported the establishment of the NHS hospital wing - Thames Ditton Hospital- at the Emberbrook Care Centre and the current fight to retain it against the latest round of NHS cuts and am a member of the national Steering Committee of CHANT -Community Hospitals Acting Nationally Together. I am also a member of Surrey County Council's Health Scrutiny Committee and have served on the former Kingston, Richmond and Esher and Mid-Surrey Health Authorities. I am a founder member of Thames Landscape Strategy which was founded to protect the historic views and buildings along our river from developers. I am a Governor of Thames Ditton Infants School and a past Chairman of Governors of Thames Ditton Junior School. As a Residents' Association councillor I am concerned to retain all that is best in our local environment, to protect the Green Belt and urban open spaces and keep a balance between the need for housing and the need to avoid over-development which would destroy the character of our area. I believe that local government is best served by councillors whose commitment is solely to their local community rather than to a national political party. |
