Elmbridge Community Awards 2006

The second Elmbridge Community Awards ceremony, sponsored by Proctor & Gamble, took place on October 19th 2006. Over thirty Award nominees and their invited guests attended the ceremony, which was held at the Civic Centre in Esher. The Mayor, Councillor Victor Eldridge, presented the eight award winners with a silver frame recognising each of their achievements across the four award categories. The Award winners for each category were as follows:

Mrs Doreen Connolly who has made a special contribution to many organisations and retired people in Elmbridge. Mrs Connolly has been a volunteer with Hinchley Wood Thursday Club for over 20 years and with Hinchley Wood Care Cars for over 12 years. She has also volunteered for CHEER for 6 years, including the role of Vice Chairman and Trustee.

Mrs Gwen Crockett who has been a volunteer at the Age Concern Shop, Weybridge, since 1997, supporting the shop twice weekly in all aspects of the work. Mrs Crockett has also played a major role in the local Brownie pack for 28 years, and supported children's reading at a local school.

Mrs Wendy Guest who has worked with 2nd Molesey Scout Group for more than 30 years, serving as a Cub Leader for 25. In addition to the regular meetings, she has taken part in camps, days out and rambles. Although Mrs Guest has now stepped down as Cub leader, she still assists the rest of the Scout team with fund raising and social events.

Mrs Vi Munford who has worked as a volunteer holiday helper for Voluntary Association for Surrey Disabled since 1979. Initially she took annual leave from her job to enable her to attend, and then continued past her retirement. Mrs Munford is now retiring from her work with Voluntary Association for Surrey Disabled after helping on a total of 46 holidays.

Mr Robert Squire who has turned his hand to all types of voluntary work in Elmbridge. Mr Squire has helped with the Elmbridge Junior Citizen Scheme for the last 6 years, volunteered for Elmbridge Blind Club for the last 7 years, was Project Manager for Brooklands Auto Project for 11 years, and is involved with Carers of Elmbridge.

Cathy Neale who has volunteered for Elmbridge Community Link for 7 years. Cathy attends the weekly drop in coffee shop and arts and crafts, and attends the soft indoor sports activity, giving support to those with learning difficulties. She also plays a large part in publicising Elmbridge Community Link and fundraising. Cathy suffers from cerebral palsy.

Mr Richard Gale who for 10 years has helped to keep West End Village, in particular the pond, tidy, free of litter and encroaching vegetation. Mr Gale has quietly got on with this work every year without fail and makes a major contribution to the village and the environment.

Mrs Brenda Rose who has been the Senior Organiser of Home Start, Elmbridge since 2000. Mrs Rose has made herself available to families and volunteers for many hours beyond her allotted time, including weekend outings with families. Through her enthusiasm, she has managed to increase the number of trained volunteers from 25 to 65, and during the last year she has supported a total of 121 families.

The Mayor, who was a member of the judging panel, remarked that he wanted to congratulate all the nominees for their individual contributions and that it had been a most difficult choice. He went on to say how much he valued the work done within the community so selflessly by so many people.
