If you may not be able to get to your polling station and would prefer not to have a postal vote, you can appoint somebody else to act as your proxy and go to the polling station on your behalf. You must complete a proxy application form and you must state why you want to vote by proxy e.g. for medical or work reasons. Your proxy can apply to vote on your behalf by post if it is more convenient for them, but they must do so at least 11 working days before an election.
You can appoint a proxy for a particular election or permanently.
If you appoint a temporary proxy for a particular election you must state why you want a proxy vote but do not need anybody to attest (support) your application.
If you appoint a permanent proxy you must ask a doctor, nurse, carer, employer or other qualified person to attest (support) your declaration. This does not apply if you are registered blind or receiving the higher rate of the mobility component of the disability living allowance.
The deadline to appoint a proxy is 6 working days before an election.
If you are able to go to your polling station on polling day you can vote there as long as you do so before your proxy has voted on your behalf. You will not be able to vote at the polling station if you proxy has applied to vote by post.
If you fall ill or are injured less than 6 working days before an election you can appoint a proxy on emergency medical grounds. You must ask a doctor or other qualified person to sign your form. Please ring Electoral Services on 01372 474182/3 or e-mail |electoral@elmbridge.gov.uk for details.
