Project Ideas for Grant Funding with ECIF

Street Scene Improvements

Empty Shop Improvements

Empty shops can be eyesores or crime magnets
Chelmsford using empty shops to advertise other service, amenities and public services
Plymouth uses photographs of Dartmoor to brighten up shop fronts
In Ilkeston offenders on community service have painted boarded up shops and covered them with large size old photographs
Dursley in Gloucestershire has a project to use 7 vacant town centre shops to showcase local artists and craftsmen. Landlords were getting shop fronts painted and cleaned in exchange for use of space for the local artist. Presence was temporary.

Shop front improvements

Making shops look more attractive can encourage visitors to shop in an area.
Run-down shops can attract anti-social behaviour such as graffiti and discourages people from visiting
Businesses working together to achieve economy of scale
Cleaning brickwork, stonework etc.
Restoring traditional detailing
Restore/replace joinery, iron & stonework.
New shop fronts, fascia etc.
Remove redundant or unsightly features.
Major permanent structural improvements.
Enhancing private forecourts.

Promotions and Marketing

Holding events to attract visitors to an area
Advertising local businesses
Promoting local shops and businesses
Events or other activities, including clean up projects, promoting town centre, village or shopping parade as a whole organised by a group of retailers

Learning and Training Skills

In Hinckley in Leicestershire a business centre was set up where regular advice surgeries take place
In addition to advising on training and learning businesses get support from Business link, promote local businesses and do business together

Community Improvement Projects

An empty shop in Dewsbury was turned into a new base for police and community services. Local people could get advice on crime prevention from police officers and access information on Sure Start services, local fire service, community rangers and neighbourhood housing.

Projects that are of benefit to the local economy or attract people to services

Security

Security for personal business (not CCTV road-facing) and initiatives to deter anti-social behaviour (not in conflict with Council policy)
Strengthened glass - higher security shop fronts
