Help with Documents

Word, Excel, PDF files and other document formats

Some downloadable documents are available in Microsoft Word, Rich Text Format (RTF) and Microsoft Excel formats. These formats are provided so users of the web site can fill in forms electronically, and print out the document for signing by hand, or returning by email. Where possible PDF versions are also supplied but these are not editable.

Viewers are available free of charge to computer users who do not have Microsoft Word, Excel or Office programs.

Many other programs can be used to view and edit documents which are in Microsoft Word, RTF or Excel formats. Examples which may be installed on your computer include Lotus Smartsuite, Ability Office, Open Office, Star Office, Microsoft Works 2000.

The |Tucows web site has many free, shareware and commercial programs to download for this purpose. Please note that Elmbridge Borough Council does not endorse or recommend any programs on the Tucows site, nor does it assume liability for any damage which may occur by the use of programs on the Tucows site.

Problems with downloadable documents

Elmbridge Borough Council endeavours to provide documents which will work correctly with Microsoft and other software, however no guarentee can be given. We will endeavour to help users who encounter problems with our downloadable documents. Please use the |web site feedback form for reporting such problems.

 

PDF files and Adobe Acrobat

image of PDF iconSome sections of this site are in a format called Portable Data Format (PDF). You may come across PDF files when viewing online leaflets, committee papers or other detailed information.

If your browser cannot display PDF, you will need a plug-in program called Adobe Acrobat Reader. This program lets you magnify and find screen text. It is freely available from the Adobe website, the adobe icon below will take you to the adobe web site to download as required.

The Adobe Acrobat Reader download is also commonly available on CD-ROMs and is often preloaded on computers.

Improved Accessibility From Adobe

If you have accessibility difficulties you may find some additional services from Adobe which improve the accessibility of Acrobat documents useful. |Visit their Web Site

Errors:

If you get this error message,

"Acrobat Reader: There was an error processing a page. A font contains a bad CMap/Encoding."

This may mean that you need a later version of Acrobat Reader to open the file. Try downloading the latest version of the software from the Adobe Web site.
