Bogus Callers and Distraction burglary
The appalling crime of stealing from old or vulnerable people by tricking them to get into their homes is known as distraction burglary; and bogus callers are the people that use guises such as 'calling from the Water Board', 'checking the gas meter', or simply 'need to use the loo'.
Elmbridge is a safe place to live and distraction burglary is low, but there are a few criminals that prey on older people and by working together we can reduce this crime.
Front line staff members and neighbours or relatives of an elderly or vulnerable person can play their part - please make sure they have information about doorstep safety. You can contact your local |PCSO for an information card, or the Crime Reduction Officer can come and give security advice. If you see anything suspicious, please contact Surrey Police immediately
If the bell should ring please remember these tips:
- Is anyone expected
- Is the back door locked
- Always put your chain on before opening the front door
- Ask for the callers ID and check it by telephone
Remember if you are unsure - never let anyone in to your home.
This crime impacts the victim in many ways:
They feel silly/stupid
That it is their fault
Inadequate
Embarrassed
Extends far beyond the loss of property
A traumatic experience
Feel that they can't tell
Fear of being put into residential care
Officers have gone back to victims to find that they are in hospital or have died shortly after the offence
